Son Parc is a small resort on the northern coast of Menorca. Famed for being home to the only 18 hole golf course on the island, it’s also got a great beach that’s family friendly and with a limited number of bars and restaurants, provides a much quieter holiday than some other resorts provide, especially compared to those on the south coast.
It’s worth noting that outside of the main summer months, Menorca’s northern resorts, such as Son Parc, can become a fair bit windier, especially in Autumn, with the famous ‘Mistral’ wind blowing across Menorca’s northern waters. During summer, it’s a different story as you’ll feel as sun baked here as you do on the south of the island. The sea is as clear here and the waters as calm as on any beach you’ll find at the southern resorts of Menorca.
The Beach at Son Parc
The beach at Son Parc, known as Arenal Son Saura, should not be confused with its southern namesake. However, it’s still a fabulous beach with soft golden sand, plenty of space, 2 beach restaurants and shallow, clear waters. So if the beach is your number one priority to a good holiday, you won’t be diasppointed.
The entrance to the water itself is gently shelving on the eastern side of the beach with little sand banks that range in depths from just 12 inches to a couple of foot in height, and depths continue in this manner for a good 50m or so out to sea. However, for little ones, you may wish to avoid the furthest western side of the bay where the sea drops quickly to around waist high and then again to a level where even adults are out of their depth. This is also the area where a small boating lane allows for pedalos to safely return to shore. The beach is lifeguarded throughout the summer months for added peace of mind.
A large, stoney car park (that needs care in the hire car) is located behind the beach and often gets full during the summer. Here you’ll also find one of the beach bars, and facilities can be used here if you buy a drink or ice cream of course.
Accommodation in Son Parc
The accommodation in Son Parc is primarily devised of single or two story apartments as part of a holiday complex. There’s also a high number of privately owned villas with whom you can book directly with Holiday Villa rental companies.
Bars & Restaurants
The restaurants and bars along the little strip that in essence is the centre of the Son Parc resort, do tend to lean towards a British targeted hospitality. Over the years, a few old favourites have since closed, but you’ll find a couple of bars, which provide a mix of food and drink and televised sport, a cocktail bar, plus a couple of good value restaurants, including a pizzeria. There’s also of course a beach bar serving a range of dishes throughout the day.
You will also find many of the aparthotels and low-rise hotels in Son Parc also have their own restaurants, some of excellent quality, which provide a finer dining experience – but of course, are a little pricier – so do make sure to check out their websites before booking your stay at Son Parc depending on your preference.
Son Parc Golf
Whilst Son Parc is a small resort, there’s no disguising the fact the resort is built around it’s best two assets – a great beach, and a really fabulous golf course. At ‘Golf Son Parc’ you’ll find a superb 18 hole golf course, designed by Dave Thomas (co-designer of ‘The Belfry’ no less) and which opened in 1977.
The Par 71 course is surrounded by pine trees and set with undulating greens, rocky bunkers, lakes, wild grasses and some dog-leg fairways. It’s also home to a number of wild peacocks! Add a little of the Autumn winds here on the north coast and you’re set for a superb golfing challenge.
The golf course is open 365 days of the year and open to non-members too. You can play 9 or 18 holes and all equipment is available to hire as clearly, not everyone will be able to bring golf clubs and bags away with them. So everyone with a love of golf is welcome – whether you’re young or old, beginner or even the golfing stuff of legends.
There is also a Driving Range, a putting green and a chipping area, all this is visible from the terrace of the lovely Bar-Restaurant, Sa Bouera D’Es Golf. Hotel accommodation is also a stones throw away which we’ll cover in our accommodation section.
